The Reasons of College Drinking

Drinking affects people's work and study, but many college students still are not going to stop drinking.

Reasons to stay the same social
Social benefits of continuing to drink include using alcohol to celebrate special occasions as well as using alcohol to socialize more regularly; drinking is still the best way to meet people, get to know people better, make new friends.Social costs of reducing drinking include having less fun, feeling left out, and finding it hard to socialize without drinking.

Nostalgia
Drinking heavily is a way to turn back the clock, recapturing college fun when getting back together with friends. Reducing drinking is hard because it represents a loss of freedom; it makes one face the reality of new responsibilities, and it's hard to leave college and youth behind.

Drinking is normal
There is no need to change one's drinking because alcohol use is a normal part of life; alcohol use per se isn't a problem; as long as one is in control of their drinking it is not a problem.

Coping/relaxation
Alcohol can help people to relax, relieve boredom, and cope with stress, which may become more important post-college. Reducing drinking makes it harder to deal with stress; there is also no way to break out of the monotony of your new routine.

Work
Drinking can advance one's status at work. Most common examples include:1) meeting expectations to drink with clients and show them a good time;2) networking by socializing at work-related functions.

Reasons to change work
Drinking interferes with getting up early and maintaining work schedule.Recovering from the effects of drinking will impair work performance, productivity, ability to obtain career goals, and ambition/motivation. Also, one's reputation at work could be harmed by observed heavy drinking, or related impairment.

Family/close relationships
Drinking can have negative effects on important relationships. Concerns included: Drinking may look bad to a potential mate, or may hurt an existing relationship; it interferes with one's responsibility to family; drunkenness may lead to infidelity; and it provides a bad model to children.

Move on from college
Reducing drinking is part of moving on from college. Drinking heavily as one gets older is inappropriate; continuing to drink heavily is a sign of being stuck (developmentally) in college. Positive aspects of moving on and transitioning to adulthood include: becoming more responsible; pursuing life goals; finding new interests, and gaining self-confidence.

Addiction/dependence/health
Continuing to drink as one does in college could lead to a drinking problem, dependence, addiction, becoming an alcoholic, losing control over alcohol.

Other negative effects
This theme captures negative consequences not specifically coded elsewhere, including: risky, reckless and/or illicit behaviors that co-occur with drinking;drinking and driving; getting arrested; getting into fights; making a bad impression; embarrassment; guilt; wasting time and being unproductive.

Cost
New financial responsibilities dictate new spending and saving priorities. The cost of alcohol is a reason to reduce drinking.
