Many College Students Enrolled in Journalism Degree Courses, But Where Will They Work?

One of the most popular degree-programs at the local University near me is journalism. Believe it or not there is actually a waiting list to get into this academic program here. Now mind you we have one of the top universities in journalism out here in California, but one has to ask where on Earth are all the students going to work when they get out of school with their degree?

There are no newspapers hiring right now, in fact they are cutting all of their journalist, and reporters. Worse, many newspapers are now buying artificially intelligent software, and you merely plug in the; who, what, when, where, and how; and the software program writes the article for you. You can hire someone for $7 an hour to run that program; so much for paying off student tuition bills.

In the magazine industry, well they are not exactly batting 1000 either, and there're so many authors now writing books that the publishing field is so diluted no one is making any money; the fact is these journalism students will not be needed.

Now it gets worse, but I suppose you are thinking, that there is merely a shift in journalism from paper to online writing; and whereas, it is true that more and more people are writing online, and more people are getting their news from the Internet, there are also 10 times as many people willing to write for $10-$15 per articles.

A journalist can't make any money doing that, and a veteran writer wouldn't stoop that low or prostitute themselves out at those prices. Once again, I wish to ask; where will the students work once they get out of school with all that debt from college tuition loans?

The Supreme Court Blatantly Lied About the Draft - It's Clearly Unconstitutional

I was a veteran of four years in the Air Force and a college student when I first heard the word "Vietnam."  I didn't know a thing about it except that it was a jungle guerrilla war where the French had lost their war to hang onto the country.  That told me we would lose, and I paid little attention to it.  My opinion on the outcome was based on the wise truism that if you are fighting guerrillas you are on the other guy's turf that they knew much better than you.  If they started to lose they simply hid their weapons in thatched roofs or buried them and blended in with the farmers and peasants.

Eventually, the outsider would declare victory and go home, and the guerrillas would simply recover their weapons and resume their war against the rulers.  But I was naturally aware that many young men bitterly opposed the draft, and when Nixon dropped it, I had the mistaken impression that the issue was settled permanently.  Not so.

Lately stories concerning reviving the draft appeared on the net sites on my daily rounds, which surprised me.  Some Google searches revealed stories going back as far as 1999 arguing against resumption of the draft, and there was a 2006 story that Representative Rangel (D-NY) said "you bet your life" he will renew his drive for a draft.  Disturbingly, he said we would need a draft to challenge North Korea and Iran next.  I didn't realize they were on the menu other than a few vague meanderings about what came after the current operations.  But on 6 September 2007, Time magazine ran a front page story by Barry Grey that both of our political parties favored reinstituting a military draft.

A mixture of articles followed over the next few years with some making the case for a new draft and about as many extolling the fact that the All-Volunteer Force was adequately meeting our military needs.  Then, in 2009, the controversy encountered a new facet.

Dr. William Babcock, an ethics professor a Southern Illinois University, reintroduced the topic of two years of mandatory civilian service for American citizens after finishing high school.  Such service could include education, infrastructure repair and maintenance, construction, healthcare, military service, and the arts.  This proposal follows the general argument Rahm Emanuel made in his 2006 book, as well as ideas endorsed by Mr. Obama.  Cato, the Libertarian think tank, rapidly responded that, "Forced service-whether the draft for military service or labor corvee-is involuntary servitude: slavery.  It is unconstitutional.  The military draft may be a wartime necessity in a TOTAL WAR (emphasis mine), and we may tolerate it for that limited purpose, but that makes it no less slavery."

Actually, while Cato probably presented the current beliefs and desires of most Americans today, it conflicts with the latest ruling of the Supreme Court.  Both the Union and the Confederacy practiced conscription in the War of Northern Aggression (in the eyes of the South).  Roger B. Taney of Maryland, the chief justice of the United States, examined the constitutionality of the Conscription Act of 1863 following its enactment.  In line with the beliefs of Jefferson and Jackson, Taney wrote a memorandum on the law that focused largely on unresolved issues of the time, the Government's right to "raise an army," and the state governments' rights to maintain a Militia. Taney reasoned that if the Federal Government could conscript soldiers, it could take the men of the states' Militias, which would violate the rights of the states.  He held that, "this Act of Congress is unconstitutional and void-and confers no lawful authority on the persons appointed to execute it."  While the memorandum covered the entire topic and reached an explicit conclusion, enormous race riots erupted at that time and Taney never had the opportunity to turn the memorandum into a legal ruling.  The Supreme Court did not have cause to examine the constitutionality of Taney's memorandum until World War I.

Prior to World War I the government had already placed itself in a constitutionally questionable position by placing the National Guard and the National Guard Reserve which were already under the uncertain power of the Dick Act of 1903, into the service of the national government.  Congress thereby converted the states' Constitutionally guaranteed self-defense forces into federal agencies.

During World War I, Joseph Aver and several fellow Minnesotans arrested for not registering for the draft, brought suit against the government.  The cases of all the men were combined into one Selective Draft Law Case.  They made several points but relied most heavily on two points, that the Constitution did not give Congress the power to draft, which is true, and the claim that the draft was a form of involuntary servitude since the men lacked the liberty to determine their own way of life, which was forbidden by the Thirteenth Amendment.

Chief Justice Edward White wrote up the case in a manner that suggested he was impaired in several respects.  He quoted portions of Article I, Section 8, that said Congress had the power to declare war, to raise and support armies, and to make rules regulating land and naval forces.  There does not appear any way to construe this to allow a draft.  Justice White also added the Necessary and Proper Clause at the end of Article I, Section 8.  This clause states that Congress can make laws which are necessary and proper to carry out powers already listed and all other powers granted by the Constitution.  Examining the powers already listed reveal only two phrases that could possibly prove relevant but in fact grant no specific power concerning a draft.  Pertinent phrases include a statement that Congress can raise money by certain means to provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States.  To a reasonable person, providing for the common defense does not necessarily include a draft.  Another phrase grants the power to raise and support armies, and another grants the power to make rules for the governance and regulation of the naval and land forces.  There are several other phrases relating to the uses of the militias.  Absolutely nothing in Article I, Section 8 can possibly be construed to permit a draft.  This whole argument based on Article I, Section 8, is meaningless, irrelevant, and totally lacking in any manner any justification for a draft.

White also rejected the defendants' claim of constitutional protection by stating that it's not logical for Congress to grant the power to raise an army without providing a way to staff it.  This argument is ludicrous because armies always have the power to enlist volunteers.  White also made the incredible claim that since other governments around the world allowed conscription, the United States must also.  White also tortured logic by claiming that since the British government had absolute authority over its subjects in the home islands, the Constitution must grant the same power to Congress.  White also claimed that during the Revolution nine states had conscription laws.  But these laws were only operable at the state level and serving in a state militia fulfilled any requirement to serve the Federal government, plus men could buy their way out of service.

Another irrational attempt by White to justify a national draft was the assertion that Massachusetts law prevented any servicemen from being court-martialed unless they are were on active duty during peacetime.  The connection to a national draft seems a little obscure.  White also referred to the Virginia law that the state militia is the proper defense for a free state, that it is bad practice to maintain standing armies in time of peace, and that the military is subordinate to civil power.  White also noted that the states did not always provide the number of men requested by the Federal government.  While true, how does this translate into a right of the Federal government to conscript anyone?  He also points out correctly that James Monroe, while Secretary of War during the War of 1812, called for the conscription of men.  But Congress rejected Monroe's request on the grounds that conscription went against the principles of a free nation.

The strongest point of the defense referred to the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution.  The Thirteenth Amendment states that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, unless as punishment for committing a crime, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to its jurisdiction.  The specific reference to involuntary servitude would seem to clearly prohibit a draft.  Clear, that is, except to Justice White, who dismissed it out of hand.  He could see no connection between "involuntary servitude" and forced military service.  He claimed that the Thirteenth Amendment was intended to prohibit slavery.  And so it does with the statement that "neither slavery...shall exist within the United States."  That seems so clear that nothing else is needed to make the elimination of slavery absolute.  Then it addresses another but separate issue by stating "neither...nor involuntary servitude (except for a crime) shall exist within the United States (parentheses mine)."  The Thirteenth Amendment clearly prohibits TWO things; 1. Slavery.  2.  Involuntary servitude (of innocent men).

The entire court agreed with White that the men were guilty of all counts, including refusing a legal requirement to serve in the military.  That finding has not been challenged legally to this day.   But it is clearly wrong because of the dual prohibitions of slavery and unwilling service specified in the Thirteenth Amendment, and "compulsory" service has been characterized as slavery or its equivalent by everybody from Mahatma Gandhi to Albert Einstein to Milton Friedman (Examiner, July 12, 2010).  It's time for the country to face up to the illegality of the draft, or any involuntary public service, and make the necessary amendments to the Constitution clearly stating that a forced draft of any kind is contrary to the Constitution.

Why You Should Attend Career Fairs - Something Every College Student Should Do

All throughout your college career, you most likely were told by your career counselor that you should be attending as many career fairs as possible. Although this sounds like good advice, the reality is that many college students and recent graduates have never attended a fair. These are great places to really advance your career and even make great contacts for the future. The main reason why every college student and recent college graduate should attend these is because of all the opportunities they will find. Most students these days look online for their jobs. Although this is great, there still are many companies that do not post jobs online. By not attending job fairs, you could be missing out on your dream job opportunity.

Another reason why career fairs are great experiences for college students and graduates is because it gives you somewhat of an exposure into the real world. Although you are not attending work with these companies, you are given insight into how demanding the job force is right now. It actually can motivate you to find a job because you will see all the competition. Many college students just assume that they will find a job eventually. While this might be true for the lucky ones, the reality of it is that you will not just be handed a job at your graduation. You need to see for yourself that work actually is required to find a job.

Attending job fairs also is a great idea because you are able to make an impression with the company. When you simply e-mail or mail in your resume and cover letter, odds are it will look exactly like all the other resumes they have received for the same job. If you go to a career fair, you are given the opportunity to speak with one of the hiring agents. Even if you get just five minutes of one-on-one time with them, that is more than you would have had sitting at home. Those five minutes could make a lasting impression - enough that you get a call back interview.

A great idea to do is to try to attend career fairs while you still are in college. The reason for this is because you will gain the experience you need to master making great first impressions. This could eliminate the time after your graduation before you get a job. You might even impress a company so much because you took the initiative to attend a career fair before you graduated that they might hire you as an intern or remember you and therefore grant you a job when you graduate.

Five Ways College Can Help You Answer Your Calling

You may know exactly what God is calling you to be in the world. Or maybe you've got some idea of your gifts and you're searching for the right way to turn those talents into a career.

No matter where you are in answering your calling, you'll find the resources you need to bring your dreams to life in college. From teaching new skills to helping you find a job, college will clear a path between you and your goals. Rather than going it alone in the workforce, consider these five ways college can help you answer your calling.

1. You Will Find Your Place

It's called discernment: the process of listening for and learning the particulars of God's plan for your life. And there are few places better than college to discern your call, to learn where your gifts and talents can fit into the marketplace and mission field.

Skilled college counselors help students select majors and careers that fit both the student's personality and the needs of the modern workforce. Professors, experts in their fields, can see potential you didn't know you possessed to use in professions you may not realize exist.

Answering your call begins with discerning just what that call is, and the right college will help you hear God's voice clearly and show you how to more efficiently follow His plans for you.

2. You Will Acquire the Skills You'll Need

What will you need to meet the particular, professional demands of your calling? Maybe you need an expert skill set designed to service the latest technologies. Or maybe you require a nimble mind, practiced in the sorts of creative and critical thinking needed to address a constantly changing world.

Whether your calling requires specific, technical know-how or a broad grounding in classical disciplines, your college should equip you with what you need to succeed in your career field. With a college education, you arrive at your job ready to add experience to your already ample training.

3. You Will Gain Faith for the Journey

When you attend a Christian college, you'll not only grow intellectually, gaining skills and knowledge to succeed in the workplace. You'll also grow spiritually, receiving an education in the foundations of the Christian faith. Pairing the right skills with a strong grasp of God's truth makes for a powerful combination in answering your call. You'll possess both the qualifications you need to seek out job opportunities, along with the Biblical wisdom and spiritual maturity to navigate your career and life.

4. You Will Become Well Connected

So you've learned the skills you need to answer your call. And with your new credentials in hand, you're ready to set out into the world and put your newly honed gifts to the test. How do you find a job?

Along with the career resources of your college, you'll find an impressive, informal source of job leads from the network of contacts you make in college. From fellow students to professors to alumni, your college community can point you to opportunities you will not find on job websites. And after you've worked your way up the ladder, your college network will be the ideal source of new recruits for the team you manage.

5. You Will Never Walk Alone

Jesus inspired his disciples with these words: "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

A Case For Christian Education

"For even though they knew God, they did not honor him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures." - ROMANS 1:21-23

Does this scripture have a familiar ring to it to you? It should, as many, if not all of us have watched the fast decline into foolishness by the state school system, both at the grade school and the college levels. What many people do not realize is that this did not begin in the 1960s with the outlawing of prayer in the public school system; but it started as early as the 1840s when Horace Mann, "the father of progressive education", following his pilgrimages to Europe and his study of their philosophies of education, removed the Bible and its sacred purposes from the schools .

The history lesson is great, but what message does it hold for us? There are a number of things of importance that this brings to our attention, but one that greatly calls attention to itself. Education is undeniably and inseparably a religious discipline. One always is teaching doctrine, whether Christian or otherwise. This should be a great concern to us because true knowledge is only available to those who acknowledge God as God. This is made clear by such verses as "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom..." - PSALM 111:10A and "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction" - PROVERBS 1:7, as well as the counterpoint of ROMANS 1:21-23. This thought process can be logically followed to realize that it is folly to adopt worldly methods of education, as they are entirely foolish.

Here is one major example: the teaching that truth is relative. This may seem ridiculous to even bring up, but research shows that the vast majority of those claiming the name of Christian in America do not believe in absolute truth. This obviously is largely because that is what they are taught, both in our schools and in our churches. Scripture clearly puts down this doctrine. In JOHN 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me." Then, as John states earlier, in JOHN 1:1, Jesus is established as the Word of God. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Therefore, Jesus, as the man and as the Word of God, is absolute truth, and should be taught as such. Every subject is connected in showing the plan of God, and each point to Him in its own unique way. Math and science show His order and His intricacy, as well as His overall connection to every part of nature. English articulates His gospel, exercises God given creativity, and speaks of the beauty of His creation. History proclaims His providential blessing and judgment respectively on those who are obedient to Him and on those who rebel against Him. The point to be made here is that God and the Word of God are absolute truth, and all subjects can and ought to be taught in connection with each other, showing their complementing and encompassing of the providential plan of God for the lives of His people and for His creation.

As Christian educators, as those bearing the torch of true wisdom and knowledge, let us remain vigilant to interpret the Word of Truth correctly and to teach God's perfect and providential
plan not as a hornet's nest of unrelated subjects but as a whole, properly equipping our young men and women to carry the torch and to, in turn, pass it on to those who come after them. Let us also do this so that they are prepared to uphold the Word of Truth before an ever-watching world and so that they can stand in the gates and not be ashamed.

Where to Find the Greatest Christian Music Online

Welcome and God bless! Finding good Christian Music can be a daunting task, but have no fear! Read on!

Christian Worship Songs

The main reason why they are written and performed is to honor Jesus Christ. Modern day Christian Music Songs are performed and related to soft rock, usually under a contemporary Christian music label. There are many genres and sub genres (styles) such as Southern Gospel, Christian Country, Pop, Metal, Hardcore, Rock, and Hip-Hop.

Some popular Christian Songs are:

1. Awake and Alive by Skillet
2. Our God by Chris Tomlin
3. Get Back up by tobyMac
4. All of Creation by MercyMe
5. Before the Morning by Josh Wilson
6. Healing Begins by Tenth Avenue North

Christian Artists

Many Christian artists have aspired to great things. Jeremy Camp a successful Christian artist gained a big break while at BibleCollege in California. The worship leader of the college heard him playing guitar in his dorm room and recommended he play in the music ministry opportunities. From then on, he became a successful Christian artist spreading worship around the world!

Where to hear Christian Music Online?

One of the best resources to hear this kind of music is through Pandora. Pandora.com is a website which finds songs similar to your interests and then plays those songs! It creates your own very personal "internet radio station". However, not all songs are on there, but Pandora is good to get an idea of an artists talents and abilities are.

Where to buy?

You can buy from Amazon mp3 downloads, iTunes, and even Pandora itself! Most songs cost around $0.99 but you can occasionally find deals on $4.99 full length CDs!

If you are a talented musician I recommend you use that talent to spread the Word through worship music from your local Church ministry!

The Lame Duck - President Barack Hussein Obama

I've said if not once, a hundred times, when is President Hussein Obama going to get into his job? I've never seen a more worthless president in my 62-years on this earth. Not to back track all the old articles I've done on this fellow, let me just look at the few new issues at hand.

We got a president here that has done nothing for two months concerning the North Korean Crisis, of killing 46-soldiers our allies other than saying "Please don't hit us anymore!" in the Pacific. We have a president that fires a four-star general because of an opinion which has more truth to it than fiction, one that was getting the job done in Afghanistan, or so than his predecessors. We got a president that has allowed American Citizens being taken out of a safe country, to Iran, and prosecuted for no reason, imprisoned for over a year-what kind of message does that give to the world? But then I'm not surprised, we got a president that has not spent one day in the military. We have a president that has not over a year been able to turn the economy one iota-matter-of-fact, it's worse than ever: not one inch better. A president that cannot keep an eye on the biggest oil producing company in the world, allowing them a freehand in whatever they want, to do as it pleases, to the point it has now caused mankind a monstrous problem in the ecological echo system, the American system. A president that has sent more troops into Afghanistan a war that is over, should have been over, for an ongoing ten-year war, like Vietnam, and there is no end to it; and one in Iraq-that was proclaimed to have been won and over, draining our resources our tax dollars to this writing-all his promises were like stars in the atmosphere, too far to reach and everyone grabbed his bull...sh..t! And he is more concerned with sending half a billion dollars to feed Hamas, while they still hold Israel soldiers in captivity; a nation that claims if it had the means, like Iran claims, would obliterate the Jews, if they had the chance. Are we all nuts in America now? If it was up to him, he'd trade Arizona for a few acres of dirt land across the Rio Grande, so Mexico could move in.

I keep hoping he does something worthwhile, but he never fails to do the opposite. And he got a Nobel Price for Peace, by gosh, is we all that blind-where is the peace; and a Ph.D., from a Christian College, a man and president for abortion, and gay rights-unbelievable. There is something wrong with the way Americans are thinking nowadays. No wonder the American Empire is crumbling, like Iran says. If that is the best he can do, God helps us in the following three years to come.

Perhaps the President should read Mr. Faulkner's "The Fable," it would do him well; as well as the rest of the population of the United States, because everyone is sleeping: in essence, the president is trying to shut the General up, why? Because he wants Americans to think the war must go on, it is the essence of man, and it makes us look stronger, and it is good business. Actually I'm surprised a General had the guts to say what was said, they usually are the link pins in keeping the rest of the military behind them fooled in thinking it is for National Security, and freedom, and all that kind of rot.

University of Duke Men's Basketball

History

Duke basketball is one of the best programs in the history of college basketball. They currently set at #4 in all-time wins. Duke has won four national championships & also appeared in a total of fifteen Final Fours. To prove their greatness, Duke has nine previous players named National Player of the Year.

Not only those eleven players, but also a total of 71 players drafted into the NBA. Duke has more current players on NBA rosters than any other college program. Something very unusual is that Duke's current head basketball coach has been at the school for 30 years.

Duke also has the most ACC(Atlantic Coast Conference) regular season championships with nineteen. On top of that, winning eighteen ACC tournament titles. UCLA is the only team that's been ranked as the #1 team longer than Duke.

They have also garnered a total of fifty-five All-Americans. To show their academic side, they have a total of fourteen Academic All-Americans. Under current coach Mike Krzyewski, Duke has made the NCAA Tournament 26 times. They have been to 19 Sweet Sixteens.

They have been chosen as the #1 seed in the tournament 11 times. 11 seasons of 30+ wins. Krzyewski has won an amazing 795 games with only 220 losses in these 30 years of being coach at Duke. They have won all four championships under his control & the most recent coming in 2010.

Former Duke Basketball Greats

There have been a number or prior Duke basketball greats. From Dick Groat in 1952 to the more recent J.J Redick in 2005. There have been a total of nine past Duke players named Player of the Year. Groat won the award back in 1952. Art Heyman followed next in 1963. Johnny Dawkins won the award in 1986.

Danny Ferry took the honor in 1989. Christian Laettner won it in 1992. Elton Brand garnered the award in 1999. Shane Battier followed by winning in 2001. Jason Williams won the award in 2002 the next year right after Battier won it. The final claim to this award goes to J.J. Redick back in 2005.

The two biggest names on this lists are probably Danny Ferry & Christian Laettner. Ferry played at Duke from 1985-1989. He won first team All-American in 1989 & second team All-American in 1988. Ferry has the single game scoring record at Duke with 58 points in a game. He ranks 5th all-time in points & also 5th in total rebounds.

Laettner played at Duke from 1989-1992. Laettner is known in NCAA Tournament history for hitting the game-winning buzzer beater against Kentucky back in 1992. This game-winning shot gave Duke the East tournament finals & propelled them into the Final Four. He holds NCAA Tournament records for scoring, free throws made, free throws attempted, & most games played.

He is also currently the all-time Duke leader in 3-pt percentage at 48.5%. Laettner is also one of only four players to have played in 4 straight Final Fours. However, he's the only one to have started in all Final Fours.

Courses For Christian Discipleship

If you are considering taking a year off for a Christian gap year you are not alone. You see, it's becoming a growing trend and people young and old are doing it for a litany of different reasons. Maybe you're nearing completion of high school and simply want to take a break and explore your spiritualism. Or maybe, as in some cases you are coming out of a failed romantic relationship and are interested in forming a new relationship with god.

Courses for Christian Discipleship Provide Structure and Guidance

No matter what your reasons are, there can be no doubt that some level of structured guidance through courses in Christian discipleship makes so much more sense than simply feeling your way around, perhaps with a pack on your back. You see that's all been tried before and more often than not those types of self guided exploratory missions inevitably wind up at a dead end. They start of well intentioned but simply lack the structure required for any measurable level of accomplishment.

Earn Up To 60 College Units Applicable Towards a Degree

Besides, with an accredited program you can earn up to 60 fully transferable college credits that are applicable towards a diploma and specialist courses in areas related to Christian ministry. Do be aware though that to be fully accredited a training program must be accredited by OCNSR under license from National Open College Network. You see sometimes the term accredited can be tossed around rather loosely

Something to Consider If You Have a Scholarship

Still another thing to consider is that if you have received a scholarship of any kind to a university, you need to check with them so you can come to a clear understanding of their policies on students taking a Christian gap year off. Most do make some form of accommodations but even so, you do need to understand their policies completely.

Yet One More Item to Look Into If You Have a Scholarship

Another thing to think about on the same topic is whether or not the university that you have a scholarship to is considering any changes in their Christian gap year policies. Make the extra effort to investigate thoroughly because a year is quite a long time and what may apply this semester my simply not be in place when you return from your gap year ready to commit yourself once again to formal university studies.

A Program to Suit Your Particular Needs

Another bit of advice is to take the time to do your research online to find the best courses for Christian discipleship to suit your particular needs. You see, there are now some organizations that can place you in a church for your gap year and even offer you more than one level of instruction. That is that you can commit fully to a Christian gap year program or commit on a lesser level, if perhaps you have competing obligations for instance.

Are You Ready For It?

Even so, no matter what type of program you decide on, what is most important is that you be at complete peace with the final decision that you make. Remember that you have a whole lifetime to study for a Christian discipleship, so if you really aren't up to it and aren't feeling the calling at the present time then perhaps further on in your life's journey there may come a time to develop a closer relationship with god through course in Christian discipleship.

Why I Became a Christian Meditator

About eight years ago, due to a failed relationship, my mind was so encumbered by negative thoughts, pain, and regret I found it difficult just getting through the day. Some days while at work I'd go into the bathroom stall and just cry. It's normal to grieve when a significant relationship ends, but instead of allowing the grieving process to take it's course and then move on with my life, I internalized these toxic emotions. This lead to years of pain and depression. Now, when I look back on this time in my life, I can actually mentally pinpoint the exact time and thought that led to me spiral down into many years of despair. It started with one thought, but that's not where it ended.

Even though I was a Christian, I suffered terribly. I went to counseling, took anti depressants, I prayed and begged God to take these oppressive thoughts away. Sometimes after prayer I would feel relief and free for that day, but as soon as opened my eyes in the morning there they were again (destructive thoughts) staring me in the face once more ready to torment my mind. It was exhausting and I thought I'd never be free or have peace of mind again. I was so overcome by anxiety, fear, and depression.

It wasn't until after many years of battling with crippling and negative thoughts that I stumbled upon the concept of Christian Meditation. How did this happen? By accident one afternoon while sitting in my car waiting for my daughter to get out of school, I started to take deep breaths and with each exhalation I would mentally say, I release pain, I release stress, and I release worry...;It was like I was pushing these toxic emotions out of my body. With each breath I felt freer until I had a peace that I hadn't experience in months.

Later, I took these deep breathing exercises and incorporated them with scriptures that affirmed God's word and promises over my life. When I was in college, I would occasionally listen to meditation tapes that would help me to relax. I took this previous knowledge and with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit incorporated the breathing and relaxation exercises, with biblically based narratives on a variety of topics and recorded my own set of Christian meditation Cds. Almost immediately after practicing deep breathing exercises and meditation techniques, my mental condition began to change.

During that time, if you were to record my negative thoughts, they came just as frequently as a parading machine gun. As I continued to practice Christian Meditation, these thoughts went from constant bombardment to once every 10 minutes, then 30, then an hour... over the course of several weeks. That doesn't seem like much but it was progress! As I continued with Christian Meditation and learning how to quiet my mind, eventually the thoughts decreased to several per day, until eventually I became totally free of them. It took several months but I was so thankful. I still battle with negative thoughts on occasion, but through Christian meditation and learning to control my thought life, I don't give these negative intruders permission to take up resident in my head anymore. Instead, I squash them quickly in the name of Jesus. I take control of them, instead of allowing them to control me.

Christian Church Camp Jobs Are Rewarding Jobs For The Faithful

So you are in high school, college, or are a recent graduate and wondering if ministry is for you. Before committing to a full-time career, you may want to consider working at a Christian church camp for the summer. Even if you are not considering becoming a member of clergy, but are simply looking for enjoyable summer work, working at a Christian summer camp may be a great choice. In fact, choosing to do this kind of work can have many benefits for you now, and into the future, no matter what career you choose to pursue. And you may even be able to leverage this work into a full-time job or career.

There are many Christian summer camp programs in the United States. Many of them are associated with a particular denomination or church, while others are outreach or stand-alone ministries. Some camps are offered only to low income children, or children with special needs, while others are offered to any child interested in attending. The common denominator of all of these church camps is that they teach the children Biblical principles, how to have a closer relationship with God, or live as a Christian today. Church camps are offered for children as young as seven and eight years old and extend to high school age kids.

Types of Church Camp Jobs

Summer camps employ a variety of workers on a seasonal basis, and some employ a few full-time workers on a year-round basis. Seasonal workers include camp counselors or cabin leaders, activity directors, camp nurses, chaplains, swimming instructors or lifeguards, and cooks. Counselors or cabin leaders will be in charge of the children residing in their cabins, making sure they attend scheduled activities, participate in group sessions, and are secure in the cabins when it is time for lights out. An activity director may be responsible for leading one or more scheduled activities such as nature hikes, arts and crafts projects, and sports activities and games. Chaplains lead worship services and prayers at meal times, while swimming instructors' and cooks' jobs are self-explanatory.

Year-round jobs are rare, but do occur, if this is an area of church ministry you are interested in pursuing as a career. The larger the camp program, the more likely there will be full-time jobs available. Full-time camp personnel may include: the camp director, hiring recruiter, administrators, and program coordinators. The full-time camp director is in charge of the camp, its facilities, programs, and managing all workers. He or she works all year round to make sure the camp facilities are taken care of and prepared for summer campers, there are sufficient and quality staff members for the summer, and to ensure there are quality programs offered that will meet the organization's goals and mission. The director may also create marketing campaigns to promote the camp. The church camp hiring recruiter is in charge of recruiting and hiring all summer personnel. He or she may also be required to put together incentives or programs to retain personnel so that they return each summer. Administrators support the director and other staff members, helping them with needed communications, mailings, and other duties. Program coordinators are required to create a theme for the summer's activities, approved by the director, and then propose activities related to that theme that are fun and informative for the campers.

Summer Camp Benefits

So how can working either seasonally or full-time benefit your career? If you are contemplating joining the ministry or becoming a pastor, this is a great way to get your feet wet. Working at a summer camp as a counselor or cabin leader will enable you to minister to the kids in your cabin in a supportive structured environment. Most camps are looking for cabin leaders who have a strong faith and relationship with God. A theological education or coursework is usually not a requirement. Camps will provide the training. Camp life is similar to being a pastor in that you are "on the job" 24/7. Kids can wake up during the night scared or homesick. And you need to provide them with a fun experience so they will want to return the next year.

In addition to allowing you to experience a kind of ministry, this experience is also great to put on a resume, no matter what career you plan to follow in the future. It shows employers you are willing to take responsibility for others and lead as well as teach. All in all, summer camp jobs, while they can be a lot of work, are great opportunities for people of faith.
