Never Answer the ONE Question Colleges Will Always Ask You (If You Want to Get In)

Throughout the entire college process, colleges are trying to figure out whether or not a prospective student is a good fit for their campus. They are constantly asking interested students - at college fairs, informational sessions, on their websites, in the applications themselves, interviews, etc. The types of questions they ask sound like they're about them, but what they're really asking for information about you. (For example, when asked the perennial favorite "Why do you want to attend our college?" The last thing you want to do is go on and on about how wonderful you think their college is - that's not the answer they're looking for!)

They will ask you questions about your activities, your academics, your thoughts on the world around you, etc. But there is one question you almost always get - likely directly in a conversation - "What other colleges are you considering (or applying to)?"

There is ONE fundamental problem with answering that question. If you answer it with a laundry list of other colleges you're considering applying to, you could damage your opportunities at that college on the spot. Here is why.

When colleges make an admissions decision, if they were focused only on the amount of money they could get in tuition, then anyone who could pay the bill would get in -- and we know that isn't the case. But getting a tuition check is only part of their concern. They are also looking at students for the value they bring to campus or results they are going to achieve while on our campus (and serve as marketing tools for us in the future).

When the colleges are asking that question, they are looking to see who their competition will be when it comes decision time. College Admissions Officers are constantly thinking to themselves, "If we say yes to this student, how likely is this student actually going to attend our college (i.e. pay us money, offer us value or get great results)?"

Answering the "What other colleges are you considering?" question doesn't help them see your value one whit - but it does help them get a sense of who their competition is and they could decide that rather than compete, they'll simply "bow out" - by saying "no thanks" to you in favor of a student they think is more interested in attending their college.

The solution? Do not give them an answer to that question. Instead, provide an "obvious answer" and then "redirect" the conversation with a question of your own. One where you can give them a glimpse of your interest in them. That is how you can find out more about them, describe yourself and they sell themselves on you based on the "value" you would bring to campus.

Now, by the way, this situation does not just happen during interactions and conversations with college admissions' officers and other admissions representatives (like current students of the college at informational sessions). This question also comes up frequently on applications. The answer is always the same, though. Provide an obvious answer and then re-direct the narrative.

Your assignment:

Never discuss the colleges you're applying to during your interactions with college representatives. You will almost always hurt your chances. Here is what I recommend my clients say to the representative of XYZ College when they are asked:

"I'm considering a few additional colleges right now, but, haven't really made an decisions yet (except for XYZ - only add this part if it's 100% true). But, while I have you here, I would really like to ask you about....." and fill in with a question you have created as part of your criteria you're using to investigate the colleges to see if they're a good fit for you.

Done. You're able to reaffirm your HIGH level of interest in the college and demonstrate some thoughtfulness and value (inquisitive, deliberate, smart) and then you're all set to move on and "close the deal" later in your carefully prepared application with dynamite essay, if and when you decide to apply to that college.

Christian Education Jobs That Are Right For You

As a Christian you want to be where God wants you to be. You have a desire to serve Him through your chosen profession. The question is are you looking for a vocation or just a profession? Do you feel you are being called by God to this profession? Then it is a vocation.

Christian employers are looking for a few good men and women. People with a strong Christian foundation. People who can be examples of God's love through their desire to serve others.

You may have taken a side step. Maybe you have failed in your previous endeavor. The fact that you are able to get back on your feet and not let pride get in the way, and try again is a wonderful quality.

Not all Christian education jobs will put you in front of a classroom. You may be called to be an administrator. You may be called to be an administrative assistant, or a Christian counselor. Each area is just as important as another. If you excel in a particular area, give God the glory.

You honor God by fulfilling His calling on your life through your vocation. Do your best to serve and be a blessing to those you come in contact with. You are demonstrating your obedience to God by heeding His call on your life.

An ordained pastor is not the only one who serves God. We all do if we are willing. Christian education jobs are as important and more so because of being able to reach more people out in the world. A person can be a cook, a salesperson, or a dad and be a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

A quick click of your computer mouse can produce listings of opportunities for Christian education jobs. You can serve in your own neighborhood or in a far away land overseas.

Marriage Duties of the Christian Husband and Wife

Many of you reading this may not know that God designed marriage to work according to the way he created the man and the woman. Each gender has its own marital duties that when practiced appropriately make the marriage thrive. "The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband." (1 Corinthians 7:3)

What are the martial duties that scripture is talking about? Understand that in a Christ-built marriage the husband has responsibilities and the wife has responsibilities, lest the marriage would have no purpose and no direction. When both the husband and the wife are practicing their duties properly it keeps the relationship structured, organized, and spiritually blessed. Everyone is happy, no one is in need of anything, and no one is looking outside the bounds of the marriage for companionship.

"Wives submit to your husbands as to the Lord". (Ephesians 5:22) It is a wife's duty to submit to her husband. God created a hierarchy in marriage according to how he created men and women. Jesus Christ is head over the husband and husbands are head over the wife in just the same way that Christ is head over the church, his body, of which he is the Savior". (Ephesians 5:23) This does not mean that man is superior to the woman.

In God's eyes men and women are equal heirs of His kingdom, and that's all that matters! In society there is a push and shove mentality that the different sexes exhibit with each other from time to time, but it doesn't mean a thing! You can't take this life to heaven with you. Why work so hard proving something that you cannot take to heaven with you? In fact, you will not see heaven if you are so burdened in this life with things of the flesh. "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21)

God chose to make Eve out of Adams flesh and bones, which illustrates that in marriage man and woman symbolically become "one flesh". The goal in marriage should always be of "oneness" between husband and wife. Do you see "oneness" in marriage today? The wife is doing her own thing and the husband is doing his own thing. They each have their own jobs, their own money, their own friends, etc. Are we honoring God with our marriage, or satan? Where is the oneness? Why are we not procuring for ourselves spiritual treasures that we can take to heaven with us?

When a Christian wife rebels against her duty of marriage she is rebelling against God and His plan for her in the marriage, consequently the marriage will have difficulties, much like what we are seeing today. Reality is, if the husband does not fulfill his marital duty to his wife properly she will have a difficult time submitting to her husband. In fact this is where the attitude of feeling like a doormat has been brought into Christian culture.

Wrong attitudes grow like yeast does in bread dough. I would venture to say that ninety percent of the Christian culture has been deceived and they don't even know it. Women have been deceived into believing that being a wife and mother is not good enough and that she must go to college and have a good career and boss her husband around. After all, most women have been told they are equal to or above men and will not be treated like a doormat. Many of them have the "no man will tell me what to do" attitude!

More and more men are being emasculated by their wives. Consequently men are looking outside of America for suitable marriage spouses so they may find a good woman who will treat him like a man. I know of many such marriages and the wives are treated with love and almost anything their heart desires. Many American women are really missing out on the blessings that come with a healthy Godly marriage.

If one link in the marriage is weak, ultimately the marriage will have no leg to stand on. Why is it so important that wives honor and submit to their husbands in everything? It is because her husband, being the man that God created him to be has a built in natural instinct to be a protector, provider, and leader. All men have this ability, even those men who believe they were born without it. When a woman usurps her husband's headship she will be in constant suffering in her marriage because she is trying to row her boat against the nature of the current.

A man needs to be treated like a man for him to be able to properly carry out his God-given calling. It is wrong for any woman to try and undermine the natural instincts of her husband because of a messed up attitude that has evolved from a confused culture-it is not natural for a woman to behave like a man and it is not natural for a man to behave like a woman--it doesn't matter what century we are living in!

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her". (Ephesians 5:25) Husbands are commanded to love their wives-in the same way Christ loved and gave himself up for us. This is why it is so important to understand what real love is. Love is not s superficial feeling of lust and desires like so many think, but principled acts and behaviors that must be acted upon and sometimes sacrificed for.

A husband cannot love his wife properly if he does not put Jesus Christ above himself and utilize the power of the Holy Spirit within him. Now there is a wonderful treasure to store up for yourself in this life. When a husband loves his wife in the ways of the Lord, he is giving up his own life for that of his wife, to make sure her needs are met and taken care of, above his own. A husband must pray about this daily and ask Christ to help him love his wife because there will be days when he may not feel like being very loving.

A man who learns to love his wife in the ways of God will be blessed with much marital happiness. The results will be a wife who respects, honors and loves her husband. Let's stop all the fussing and fighting and lets start honoring God with our marriage. What one thing can you do today to help bring your marriage back to God? What spiritual treasures can you store up for yourselves in marriage?

In the Face of Bad Publicity Long Term Christian Missionaries Quietly Serve Haitians

On January 31, ten missionaries from the Central Baptist Church in Meridian, Idaho and the East Side Baptist Church in Twin Falls, Idaho were arrested at the Haitian-Dominican Republic border for attempting to smuggle 33 Haitian children out of the country. Both churches are members of the Southern Baptist Convention, which runs relief programs worldwide and is America's largest Protestant denomination.

The spokeswoman for the missionaries said they were "just trying to do the right thing."

Some do say their actions can be understood in light of Haiti's tragic situation. Even before the earthquake, roughly 15 percent of the children were orphaned or abandoned, many living in institutions or on the streets. It was a country whose poverty would shock most Americans. The earthquake, which some call the most cataclysmic event in generations made an already wretched situation worse. More Haitians than ever live in squalor and more children than ever are orphaned or homeless. It's hard to imagine how a child could grow up in bleaker circumstances, with a bleaker future.

It takes considerable tact and sensitivity to negotiate the racial, linguistic, religious, and cultural divide that exists between foreign missionaries and Haitians. The Idaho missionaries failed.

Sadly, this incident casts a cloud over other Christian missionaries in Haiti. There are many Christian groups there with long track records of working cohesively with the Haitian people. Let's take a brief look at five of them.

Haitian Christian Outreach

Haitian Christian Outreach (HCO), of Mahomet, Illinois, has uplifted the spiritual lives of Haitians since 1989. Its first and foremost task has been to build a number of Emmanuel Churches. But it has also prioritized health care, establishing roving medical clinics that scour the country to provide free medical and dental care for Haitians who cannot afford to see a doctor or a dentist. It also runs fixed medical and dental clinics.

The Children's Ministry of HCO partners with Haitian Christians to spread the Gospel. HCO partners with the staff of Emmanuel Christian School to provide quality K-9 education, biblical training, and physical nourishment. The Haitian Christian Outreach Children's Fund provides food, education, uniforms, and health care to more than 1,200 students in three schools.

HCO has been in the forefront of efforts to help the Haitian people recover from the mammoth earthquake of January 12. It has responded to the fear people have of sleeping inside buildings -- because of the continuing aftershocks -- by providing tarp, tents, and mosquito nets to make sleeping outside agreeable.

It has provided food to more than 500 families, distributed potable water, and brought in sea containers and prepackaged meals.

Northwest Haiti Christian Mission

Northwest Haiti Christian Mission (NWHCM), from Versailles, Kentucky, has served the Haitian people for 30 years. It focuses its efforts in northwest Haiti where poverty is at its worst in the poverty-stricken nation. NWHCM's record of service to northwest Haitians is long. It has worked with indigenous Haitian Christian churches to lift people out of spiritual, physical, and social poverty.

NWHCM benefits thousands of people "regardless of age, gender, religion" through various programs: primary schools, feeding projects, orphanages, medical clinics, church planting, a Bible College, and agricultural development. It is the largest employer in northwest Haiti and among the biggest ministries in the country.

In the early days after the earthquake it provided roving medical aid. It has since gone on to work with the government of Saint Louis du Nord to provide food, physical therapy and rehabilitation, and orthopedic surgery, including hand surgery for the many in need.

Haitian Christian Mission

Haitian Christian Mission (HCM), of Indianapolis, Indiana, has served in Haiti for 34 years. It exists "to save souls for the Kingdom of Christ." Its educational, medical care, and nutrition centers advance its mission and give children a future.

HCM has established schools to teach reading, writing, arithmetic, and basic French. Its objective is to build a school to go with every one of its churches.

Haiti is a medically-deprived nation, having only one doctor for every 4.000 people. Endeavoring to turn the tide, HCM recently began collaborating with Project Haiti Heart to establish an OB-GYN next to its two hospitals in Fonds Parisiens, giving 80,000 people access to quality health care.

HCM nutrition centers serve roughly 7,480 meals to children every day, focusing on those who suffer from second and third degree malnutrition.

HCM also has a sponsorship program, wherein persons and groups in the United States donate $30 a month to provide food and education to the neediest Haitian children.

The ministry brought in a volunteer medical team after the earthquake. The team and the staff at Fonds Parisiens hospitals have treated hundreds of victims -- people with broken arms and legs, back and head injuries...

Missions of Love

Missions of Love (MOL), based in Hartford, Kentucky, began as a medical mission nearly 30 years ago in Jolivert. Innovation has been one of its features. One example is its Mamba blend (made of powdered milk, sugar, oil, and vitamins mixed with peanut butter). Mamba treats moderately and severely malnourished children between the ages of one and five.

Through the years MOL has taken on many other programs, some in partnership with other organizations. The Adult Literacy program helps adult Haitians learn to read and write. The Ear and Eye Clinic offers low cost or free eye exams and eye wear to Haiti's poor. The clinic also diagnoses and treats ear disease.

MOL works with the nonprofit Feed My Starving Children to provide food for needy children and nourishment for their souls. And it works with an Ohio family to provide medical supplies including dressings, syringes, rubber gloves, and surgical instruments to clinics and hospitals.

MOL outreach clinics enable children in remote villages and mountainous areas to get medical treatment...children who would otherwise go without the critical service.

The organization's Planting New Churches program feeds nutritious meals daily to children. Its Safe Drinking Water program reduces typhoid, dysentery, and parasitism.

MOL's Micro Finance program helps women in Haiti pay off loans and expands their businesses.

The Tents-4-Haiti program has been especially useful after the earthquake. It's made it possible for a population that is without housing or is reluctant to sleep with a roof over its head (because of the continuing threat of aftershocks) to sleep comfortably outside. MOL has provided other earthquake aid including medical teams, food, and water purification.

Haiti Christian Mission

Haiti Christian Mission, from Waco, Kentucky, provides discipleship training and enhances economic and educational opportunities for the community of Galette and surrounding areas.

The mission started in 1983 to support Ed & Pam Hardy from Irvine, Kentucky who worked 2 years helping with building church and other buildings for the Christianville Mission in Haiti. In 1984 they began to support Choubert Remy in securing an education and returning to Haiti in Christian service. HCM missionaries provide meals, clothes, dental, and medical care.

The Russell Christian School has been HCM's main contribution to Haitian society. Choubert and his wife Bernadette established the school in 1995. In that time it has grown from 30 K-6 students to 250. These students would go without education were it not for this school. They learn basic reading, writing, arithmetic, and science, in addition to learning Christian principles and the Gospel.

HCM has played an important role in disaster relief since the earthquake, providing food, water, and medical supplies to Galette and surrounding communities.

These five Christian Missions have served in Haiti for decades. They are staffed by mostly native Haitians and the Americans that are in service have taken the time and attention to learn the culture and ethnic nuances of the people. These missions do not deserve to be lumped with the Idaho missionaries. These missions deserve your prayers and support so they can continue the good work they perform.

The Art And Practice Of Teaching - A Review

In one hundred and forty eight pages, the writer focuses on the Christian education approach to teaching. The first chapter stresses the intentional, holistic, change-oriented and God-centered goals, with a very strong emphasis on the latter as the student is transformed. After discussing the characteristics of the effective teacher, he emphasizes that teachers must realize that the power of their example is very critical in effecting quality change in the lives of their students.

Using Jesus as the model or Master Teacher, the writer highlights, among other things, His maturity, mastery, certainty, humility, consistency, spontaneity, clarity, urgency, variety and sensitivity. It is the responsibility of the teacher, he argues, to motivate, stimulate and encourage participation. He does not only expose the behavior of an ineffective teacher but suggests useful ways to handle him. Chapter two discusses the importance of setting learning objectives to the teaching which needs planning. The preparation of cognitive, affective and behavioral objectives give a holistic approach to Christian education. Specified levels of learning, defined terms and examples given all present their relevance and show how the teacher can write lesson objectives. Chapter three directs attention to the learners listing and explaining four learning styles which include the dynamic activist, imaginative, reflector, analytical theorist and the common sense pragmatist. Chapters four to seven deal with teaching the younger and older children, teenager and adult since learning is a life-long process. Four steps in planning a lesson for younger children follow the discussion on the characteristics of this age group. They include setting the objectives, studying the learning styles, sensing the senses and selecting the methods. Although the same stages were used, relevant learning characteristics are described in relation to the older children and teenage in chapters five and six respectively. The same planning steps are suggested for the adult in chapter seven after the debate on definition. Three modern western approaches to adult learning (self-directed learning, critical reflection and experiential learning) are discussed which the writer believes must be adapted to the African contexts. The discussion on classroom management in chapter eight is very important since this comprehensive term includes disciplinary actions, daily routines, seating arrangement and scheduling of lesions. Consequently, after analyzing four approaches (friendship, authoritative, permissive and authoritarian), the writer is of the opinion that the authoritarian approach (which positively reinforces good behavior and deals firmly with unacceptable conduct) is the best for classroom discipline.

The excellence in planning and preparation, lesson preparation, relationships and personalities constitute the four categories of excellence that the teacher needs to adopt as professional standards in chapter nine where the emphasis lies on evaluating and improving one's teachings. A major indicator of the teacher's effectiveness is his personality. Since students looks for a credible and authentic teacher, the latter must ensure that his/her teaching is improved. How do we know that students are learning? In answering this question in chapter ten, the writer explains the educational, administrative and motivational reasons for the effective use of assessment. Two reliable and valid guidelines are presented as characteristics of good assessment. The importance of not relying on one test to judge a student's performance is noted and a recommendation is made of the continuous assessment.

A realistic assessment of the need to assess students by other means is presented. Issues like clear instructions, availability, objectivity and co-operative or individual work must be considered when the student prepares assignments. Eighteen types of assignments are discussed. An implication is that the teacher should keep complete and accurate records. In assessing higher education, vital issues like the correct style for foot noting, end noting and plagiarism are also discussed. Four major types of objective questions (true/false, matching, multiple-choice and sentence completion questions), their concepts, steps in preparing and examples are outlined in chapter thirteen where the teacher is warned to note that interests and biases can negatively influence the setting of these questions.

Admitting the difficulty of assessing and grading students (especially subject assessment), the writing proposes ways of setting and marking questions. Examples of the short essay question and the more formal essay and guidelines for writing good essay questions are given. In order to assist in understanding them, these guidelines are used to evaluate weaknesses of ten essay questions. Chapter fourteen presents the layout of marking schemes for subjective and objective questions. Although subjective marking guides are more difficult, the writer assists the teacher to develop a scheme which, if followed, could help maintain consistency in marking. The writer argues in the conclusion that since teaching is a service, it should be directed at the fulfillment of the learners and not the teacher. It is expected that the learners are equipped to carry in their hearts, hands and minds Christian truths in a dying world.

The writer's emphasis on the teachers' responsibility of self development is in consonance with the law of the teacher which states that one stops teaching in the future when he stops growing in the present. The teaching methods he proffers for the imaginative reflector, analytical theorizers, common sense pragmatists and dynamic activists is a very useful attempt to illustrate their relationship.

A major criticism could be the presentation of the three areas of the personality that need to be developed at several portions of the book without directly referring to Benjamin Bloom who developed the taxonomy of educational objectives.

Areas of insight include the far flung or very wide range of types of governments, papers and projects, issues raised under the heading 'focus points' at the end of each chapter, approaches to teach at all levels, approaches to discipline and ways in which the teacher can improve him/herself.

Me Taking College Algebra: Like Letting the Eye Be the Foot, Etc.

And no wonder the American education system is so messed up. We try to make the eye be the foot as well, etc.. For another metaphor, we also try to make the kosher eater eat everything, and the one who eats everything eat only kosher: "4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills." (1 Cor. 12:4-11) "1 Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. 2 For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. 4 Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. 5 One person esteems one ...

Limestone College in Gaffney

Limestone College is a 4 year liberal arts college located in Gaffney, South Carolina. The Christian, non-denominational college was established in 1845 as the first women's college in South Carolina. In the late 1960s Limestone became coeducational. Nine of the campus buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the Gaffney campus, Limestone College offers evening classes at seven other campus locations and on the Internet. The other campus locations are in Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Greer, Kingstree, Lowcountry (Yemassee), and Aiken/North Augusta.

Total enrollment at Limestone College is approximately 3,500 students. There are 700 traditional day students and 2,800 students enrolled on extended campuses and the Internet. There are 24 majors offered at Limestone College. Several different degrees are conferred: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Associate of Arts, and Associate of Science. The student to faculty ratio is 18:1. Resident dorms are available on the Gaffney campus. There are two men's dorms and two women's dorms, most in the suite style.

Athletics are an important part of college life at Limestone. Because of the small student body, many students play more than one sport. "Saints" athletics teams compete at the NCAA Division II level. There are 22 teams of men's and women's sports, including basketball, soccer, lacrosse, golf, and tennis. Limestone had the first collegiate lacrosse team in South Carolina, and currently has the only collegiate field hockey team in the state. There is also an intramural athletics program. Athletic facilities at the college include an indoor pool, 8 tennis courts, baseball/softball fields, and a soccer/lacrosse field.

Limestone College has excellent art, music, and drama departments. They provide concerts, theater productions, and art exhibits for the student body and the community throughout the year.

Gaffney, home to Limestone College, is a small town in the Upstate of South Carolina. It is perhaps best known for the two nearby Revolutionary War landmarks: Cowpens National Battlefield and King's Mountain National Military Park. Another well known landmark is the Peachoid, the "Million Gallon Peach" water tower located off Interstate 85. Located in a big peach producing region, Gaffney is the home of the South Carolina Peach Festival, held this year the weekend of July 15-17. Historic downtown Gaffney offers restaurants, antique shops, and fine arts stores. Other major shopping in Gaffney is available at the Prime Outlets off I-85. The "Yellow Mall" has over 70 stores.

Biblical Foundation For Christian Morality

Introduction

The term 'morality' has been defined in an explanatory way under two broad classifications in this article: (a) general description, (b) biblical description. The main reason for this classification is to be able to compare biblical system of morality, which is the focus of the study with other systems of morality. Scott B. Rae observed, 'most people use the term morality and ethics interchangeably. Technically, morality refers to the actual content of right and wrong. Morality is the end result of ethical deliberations, the substance of right and wrong'.1 While noting this difference, the terms would be discussed as an inseparable pair in this paper.

General Definition of Morality

According to the New Bible Dictionary, the words 'ethics' and 'morals' according to the Greek and Latin books mean 'customs'.2 The idea is to discover the things that are usually done and conclude that these are the things one ought to do. Logically, it follows that these are the things that will seem right to the individual and also to society. Scott B. Rae goes a bit further in stating what morality is primarily concerned about. He said that morality is primarily concerned about questions of right and wrong, the ability of distinguishing between the two, and the justification of the distinction.3 There may be norms in society, with reference to what is right and wrong. However, society faces so many new and challenging issues, that people are forced into ethical deliberations. Samuel Enoch Stumpf, in his book, 'Elements of Philosophy', possesses the following questions: Why can't we do just what we want to do? What difference does it make to anyone how we behave? Why does the question of ethics arise in the first place? Why should we think that one way of behaving is better than the other? That telling the truth is better than trying to get ourselves out of trouble by telling a falsehood? And who has the authority to tell us what to do? He concludes by saying that one should study ethics in order to find answers to the questions, what should I do? And why should I do it?4 From Stumpf's statement it can be seen that the main issue that divides people in their moral views is that of the ultimate source of moral authority.

Norman L. Geisler in the first seven chapters of his book, 'Ethics: Options and Issues' shows this division among people as he discussed the basic approaches to ethics. He states that ethical systems could be broadly divided into two main categories: deontological (duty centered) and teleological (end-centered). Deontological systems are systems that are based on principles in which actions (or character or even intentions) are inherently right or wrong. Teleological systems, on the other hand are system that are based on end result produced by an action.5 Scott B. Rae, in his discussion on ethical systems included one more division - relativism, to that already stated by Geisler. According to him 'relativism' refers to an ethical system in which rights and wrongs are not absolutes and unchanging, but relative to one's culture (cultural relativism) or one's own personal preferences (moral subjectivism).6 However, this third category can still fit under Geisler's two divisions. Further, Geisler stated that there are six major ethical viewpoints: (i) Antinomianism - says there are no moral norms; (ii) Situationism - affirms that there is one absolute law (the law of love); (iii) Generalism - claims that there are some general laws but no ones; (iv) unqualified absolute laws that never conflicts; (v) conflicting absolutism - contends that there are many absolute norms that sometimes conflicts and one is obligated to do lesser evil; and (vi) graded absolutism - holds that many absolute laws sometimes conflict, but one is responsible to obey the higher law. Geisler pointed out these six sub-categories are based on a view of ethical approach, which revolves around norms - deontological.7 In contrast the other approach does not stress norms but ends - teleological, and is described as non-normative or utilitarian approach.

Biblical Definition

1. General Observations

D. H. Field observed that, 'biblical ethics are God centered, instead of following majority opinion, or conforming to customary behaviour, the scripture encourages us to start with God and his requirement - not with man and his habits - when we look for moral guidelines'.8 In order to understand the Bible's definition of morality, one needs to examine the scripture, as Field observed, to see what God says and requires. He points out five things from the Bible about biblical morality points us to the person of God to discover that nature of goodness. God alone is good and it is his will that expresses what is good and acceptable and perfect; ii) the source of moral knowledge is revelation. According to the Bible, Knowledge of right and wrong are not so much an object of philosophical inquiry as an acceptance of divine revelation; iii) moral teaching is phrase as commend not statements. With the exception of the OT wisdom literature, moral judgements are laid down flatly, not argued out reasonably. The philosophers on the other hand had to reason their moral judgment in order to convince people that they are good; iv) The basic ethical demand in biblical ethics is to imitate God. God sums up goodness in his own person. Man's supreme ideal according to the Bible is to imitate him; v) Religion and ethics is theocentric. The moral teachings of scripture loose its credibility once the religious undergirding is removed. Religion and ethics are related as foundation to building. Biblical ethics spring from biblical doctrine and the two are inseparable. 9

2. Morality in the Old Testament

From a amore general overview of biblical morality, it is but proper to understand the concept as presented in the two testaments. In the OT a close understanding of the covenant, the Law and the Prophets can give one a clearer understanding of morality. These three aspects will now be examined individually examined.

a) The Covenant

The covenant God made with Israel through Moses (Exod. 24) had direct and far-reaching significance. God's grace as seen in his actions of love and concern in delivering Israel from Egypt, supplies the chief motive for obedience to his commandments. The Israelites as God's partners were united to respond gracefully to God's prior acts of underserved love. They were called to his will in gratitude for his grace, rather than submit in terror to threats of punishment. For this reason, for example, slaves were to be treated generously because God treated the Hebrew slaves with generosity in Egypt.

The covenant also encourages an intense awareness of corporate solidarity in Israel. Its effect was not only to unite the individual to God, but also to bind all covenant members into a single community. A man's transgression therefore can affect the whole community (josh 7), and everyone is under obligation to help a needy person. The strong emphasis on OT ethics hinges on social ethics.

b) The Law

The covenant provided the context for God's law giving. A distinctive feature of the OT law was its stress on the maintenance of right relationships between people and between people and God. It can be noted that the most serious sequence of the law breaking was not any material punishment, but the resulting breakdown in relationships. (Ho 1:2). The Ten Commandments, which should be seen as the heart of the law, are concerned with the most fundamental of relationships. They set out the basic sanctity governing belief, worship and life.

c) The Prophets

Social conditions in Israel changed dramatically since Moses' time, and the Israelites failed to see how the law required obedience in their daily dealings in society, which also affected their relationship with God. The Prophets made it their business to interpret the law by digging down to its basic principle and applying these to the concrete moral problems of their day.

2. Morality in the New Testament

Norman L. Geisler made the following observations about New Testament
Ethics:

1) That Christian ethics is based on God's will. It is, as she puts it, a form of

divine command position; an ethical duty, which is something we ought to

do. It is prescriptive;

2) that Christian ethics is absolute. The fact that God's moral character does
not change (Mal 3:16) means those moral obligations that flow from his nature are absolute. Geisler points out that whatever is traceable to God's unchanging moral character is a moral absolute e.g. holiness, justice, love, truthfulness and mercy. Other commands flow from God's will, but they are not absolute. That is, they must be obeyed because God prescribed them, but he did not prescribe them for all people, times and places. Absolute moral duties, on the contrary are binding on all people at all times and in all places;

3) That Christian ethics is based on God's revelation. What God commands

has been revealed both generally (Rom. 1:19-20;2:12-15) in nature, and

specifically (Rom. 2:2-18;3:2) in scripture. God's general revelation

contains his command for all people. His special revelation declares his

will for believer;

4) That Christian ethics is prescriptive since moral rightness is prescribed by

a Moral God. Geisler pointed out that there is no moral law without a

moral Lawgiver, or a moral legislation without a moral legislator. Therefore

Christian ethics is prescriptive not descriptive. Christians do not have their

ethics in the standard of Christians but in the standard for Christians - The

Bible; and

5) Christian ethics is deontological. That is, based on principles in which

actions (or character or even intentions) are inherently right or wrong.10

CONCLUSION

Morality, as defined in this paper is the actual content of right and wrong. The major issue however is how to determine it. The main question that arises out of this issue is: Where lies the ultimate source of moral authority? One group of people believes that authority is immanent, human beings have the authority to create their own moral rules and systems - they fall under the category of teleological ethics. The other group believes that moral authority is transcendent, that is, authority exists outside of ordinary human experience. In biblical morality, that authority is God, who has revealed himself to human beings through his special and general revelation. That makes biblical ethics unique. It is deontological. In both the old and New Testament it is seen that morality is grounded in the nature and character of God.

As was pointed out, ethics and morality are inseparable. For Christians, ethics is not so much of determining the good but of choosing it. For non-Christians it is more of determining the good. Whether one is a Christian or not as human being, one will certainly engage in ethical deliberations.

2. The Infant Cry of God

Milton (ENGL 220) Milton's early ode, "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity" (1629) is presented and discussed. The author's preoccupation with his standing as a novice poet and his early ambitions, as carefully outlined in the letter to Charles Diodati, are examined. The ode's subject matter, other poets' treatment of the Nativity, and Milton's peculiar contributions to the micro-genre are discussed, including his curious temporal choices, the competitive attitude of his narrator, and the mingling of Christian and classical elements. The rejection of the pagan world in the poem's final stanzas is explicated and underscored as an issue that will recur throughout the corpus. Additional reading assignments for this class meeting include "At a Vacation Exercise in the College" (1628), "On the Death of a Fair Infant" (1628), and "Elegia sexta" (1629). Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Fall 2007.

College Student Work - The Right Choice?

College student work is much higher in demand now than it used to be several years ago. Many more students now work part-time and full-time jobs than they did in the past. College student work comes in many forms, from part-time admin work to odd jobs to labor. Either way, the extra income is necessary for most university students and picking the right college student work is more important than they think.

The reason why it is vital to pick the right kind of college student work is because of the demanding schedule that university students have. Some students may have a more hectic semester than others with double majors, final year research projects and theses. Therefore, the choice of work should depend on the amount of time a student can set aside for work.

In addition, different students have different financial requirements, depending on how much they receive from their parents or in the form of scholarships etc. The expenditure of individual students also varies depending on their accommodation option, travel expenses and university tuition. This is therefore another important factor to consider when looking for college student work.

There are many work options for university students, and it shouldn't be too difficult to find a job. Even if a part-time job is hard to come by there are many other options.

Other college student work options:

Tutoring - assisting other students with their courses
Odd Jobs - anything from mowing a lawn to walking a dog
Online Writer - Write articles and sell them online
Personal Trainer - Help out a newbie at the gym
Fixer-Upper - Helping with computers, internet connections, or even a simple dorm room door
Deliver Newspapers - Early morning job that won't interrupt with a school schedule
Modeling - For the arts section in college or even an agency
Plasma Donation - Jabbed by a needle for a few bucks
Work Study Program - usually accessible through university websites
Affiliate Marketing - selling products online (belonging to other people) for a handsome commission.

All of these earning methods have their pros and their cons. If a student can analyze their financial needs and available time, then selecting from this wide range of college student work options will be easier. After all, there is no point earning fabulous amounts of money while in college if the end result is failing your classes or missing out on the "college experience."

Christian Guitar Tabs - Using Tabs To Play Worship Songs

"What are Christian guitar tabs?" you may be asking yourself. It can be sort of confusing because people use the words 'tab' and 'chart' when they are referring to the same thing, which is a chord chart. I'll use Christian guitar tab in this article when referring to a chord chart, but let me explain what an actual guitar 'tab' is, because sometimes you with find 'tabs' on chord charts.

'Tab' is short for tablature. Tablature is a number-notation system created mainly for people who can't read music but more specifically for lead guitar players who want to learn how to play specific guitar lead lines in songs. Now, there aren't, or historically haven't be, I should say, complex lead lines in most Christian praise songs. But there are some simple hooky lines that are fun to learn when learning some of these songs.

Again, tablature is mostly beneficial for people like me as a kid-kids who love bands with intricate lead solos and like to sit for hours and learn all the complex lead lines from their favorite songs. The numbers represent frets, while the six line layout represents the six strings on the guitar. It's a very easy system that could be picked up by even the most beginner guitar player, which is exactly what I was back then.

Well, Christian guitar tabs are different. While some charts include actual tablature, usually just to show how to place your fingers to form the right chords, most just have letters A-G over particular words, representing the chord you are to play at that specific time of the song. It's pretty straight forward, really. The trick is just learning to play those chords, switching from one to another quickly and figuring out some basic strum patterns. With those things, and a handful of Christian guitar tabs, you'll be playing your favorite worship songs in no time.

The problem, though, with Christian guitar tabs online is that they are often inaccurate. While they will usually have the correct lyrics, the chords are often either wrong or wrongly placed on the chart, which is even more frustrating-not to mention time consuming to fix. With the right search, you can find ones that are accurate, but by that time you're ready to bang your head against the wall and shut your computer down. And often times the only accurate charts are the ones you have to pay for by the chart, which is fine, and I want to support musicians and worship leaders, but sometimes I just want to take a quick look at the chart to see if I'm playing the right chord, and then I can move on with my life.
